The membership of the National Association of State Fire Marshals includes the most senior fire officials in the United States and District of Columbia. The mission of NASFM is to protect life, property and the environment from fire and related hazards. Most state fire marshals are responsible for fire safety code adoption and enforcement, fire and arson investigation, fire incident data reporting and analysis, public education and advising governors and state legislatures on fire protection. In addition, some state fire marshals are responsible for fire fighter training, hazardous materials incident responses, wildland fires and the regulation of natural gas and other pipelines.
NASFM has accepted a Federal agency's challenge to help ensure the safety of America's vast and growing pipeline infrastructure. The US Department of Transportation's Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) tapped NASFM to help achieve the goal of zero pipeline incidents. NASFM also will be a leading voice of confidence in pipeline safety, when such confidence is deserved.
To achieve the common goal, NASFM will rely on the experience and lessons learned from the many existing pipeline safety programs, from the federal, state and local regulators involved with pipeline safety, from the industries that use and operate pipelines, and from the communities with pipelines in their backyards. The safety and reliability of our nation's pipelines is a shared responsibility, and the State Fire Marshals will unite the many organizations that have worked to ensure this end. But, the program will go beyond the traditional agencies and organizations engaged in pipeline safety. NASFM intends to oversee the training and mobilization of America's firefighters to coalesce communities in the pursuit of even higher levels of safety and even greater confidence in our vital pipeline system. Overall, the program will not focus on simply doing what is required, but on achieving a level of excellence that far exceeds minimum safety standards.
